Christian Distinctiveness

The Best We Can Be

At Mells Church of England First School, our Christian vision is at the heart of everything we do. It shapes our relationships, our curriculum, our decision-making and the way we care for one another.
Our vision is:
"To create a safe, caring and aspirational learning community, inspired by our Christian values, where we thrive through challenge, fun, friendship and belonging, enabling us all to be the best we can be."
As a small village school, we believe that every child is unique, valued and loved by God. We strive to ensure that every member of our school community feels known, supported and encouraged to flourish.

Inspired by the Parable of the Lost Sheep

Our vision is rooted in Jesus' Parable of the Lost Sheep.

Jesus told the story of a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. When one became lost, the shepherd left the ninety-nine and searched until the missing sheep was found. Rather than seeing the sheep as just one among many, the shepherd recognised its value and celebrated when it was safely returned.

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?"
Luke 15:4

"Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep."
Luke 15:6

This parable reminds us that everyone matters. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, included and loved. At Mells, we believe that no one should be overlooked and that every child should be supported to fulfil their potential and become the best they can be.

Our Christian Values

Our Christian vision is lived out through six shared values that guide our learning, relationships and decision-making every day:
  • Reverence
  • Truth
  • Wisdom
  • Service
  • Endurance
  • Compassion
These values are rooted in Christian teachings and help us to create a school community where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to flourish.

Collective Worship

Collective Worship is a cherished part of our school day—a time when we all come together as a community to reflect, celebrate, and grow. It’s a moment that feels truly special, where every voice matters and children are encouraged to share their thoughts, beliefs, and questions about life and faith.

Through stories from the Bible, we explore Christian values and discover how they guide us in our everyday choices. We think deeply about our world and our place within it, learning to be thoughtful, kind, and responsible global citizens.

Our Collective Worship is lively and interactive—filled with role play, discussion, music, and moments of joy. It’s a space where learning meets spirituality, and where children flourish through creativity and connection. We also take time to celebrate achievements, big and small, and often welcome parents to share in these uplifting experiences with us.

It’s more than just a gathering—it’s a heartbeat of our school.

Our Church Partnership

We enjoy a strong and valued relationship with St Andrew's Church, Mells. Through regular worship, celebrations and community events, children experience the importance of faith, belonging and service.

These links help us to strengthen our understanding of Christian values and reinforce the sense of community that is such an important part of life at Mells.

Spiritual Development

We believe education should nurture the whole child. Alongside academic learning, we provide opportunities for children to reflect, wonder, ask questions and develop spiritually.

Children are encouraged to explore big questions about themselves, the world around them and their place within it. We create opportunities for reflection through Collective Worship, Religious Education, outdoor learning and everyday classroom experiences.

Living Out Our Vision

Christian distinctiveness at Mells can be seen every day in the way we treat one another, the opportunities we provide and the relationships we build.
Our aim is for every child to leave Mells with confidence, compassion and a love of learning, knowing that they are valued and capable of achieving great things.
Together, as a school community, we strive to be the Best we can Be.
